Julie and Julia

Last night we watched Julie and Julia on “Pay Per View,” using our $0.99 “coupon” from the cable company. Wonderful, entertaining movie (I don’t watch “films”) and no one does voices or accents like Meryl Streep. The blog by Julie Powell, the Julie/Julia Project remains up, though it has been updated since 2004.

It occurred to me as we “pushed” the “buy” button that it’s a wonder that video rental stores remain in business at $4.99 per title. Perhaps not such a wonder as folks, presumably, want to hold movies for more than 24 hours, which is all the cable company allows. On the other hand, my wife told me that a local megaplex is just $3.00 on Tuesdays, which certainly during the holidays is quite doable. Now, if they’d only take down the price of popcorn.

We spent at a local mall doing our holiday shopping for one another. Shop clerks were almost genuflecting as we walked through their doors. I recall the years of “hustle and bustle” at stores during this time of year. How sad the economy has taken that away, though I was grateful that we had a few dollars to actually buy gifts.

Of course, the online venues, especially Amazon, has just about everything and I must admit that with the “Prime” membership which has paid for itself (and probably, over the years, prompted me to buy more there) it certainly is easy and quick. No, this is not an ad for Amazon, but I do love the venue.

Not being a Pro Football person, I’ll spend the day watching movies. I’m going to watch the original “Taking of the Pelham One Two Three” and then the remake. It doesn’t take a lot to amuse me.
