Biologists, philosophers,
Even our Saviour
Have often sought keys
To human behaviour,
Now the secret I’ve hit on
Makes moralists cringe,
But I speak it out loud:
We want revenge,
& the successful evolution
Of humankind
Is based on the art
Of hitting from behind . . .
I say it in whimsey,
I write it in black:
Whatever wrong is done us,
We do back . . .
Christians may mutter
From now to next week,
The stunning virtue
Of turning one’s cheek,
But the truth of the matter
Of where life’s at
Is that this is the universe
Of tit for tat,
Or if I may muster
My bedroom wit,
Love’s the refreshing exchange
Of tit for tit . . .
This is my slogan,
So humanly true:
If you screw me,
I screw you. . .
